Mechanical Gears And The Science Behind Them
Mechanical gears are round shaped wheels that has teethes which mesh with other gear teeth. The main aspect is the transfer of power must be complete without slippage. Depending on the perfect design and architecture, they output different speeds or torques from the input power source. Gear not only meshes with another gear but also with any device that has compatible teeth.
Mechanical advantage of a gear is derived by varying the combination of gears of unequal sizes. Gear Ratio is the term used to measure gears and it is derived from the arrangements of gears. The unit of gears are number of teethes or gear diameter.
Mechanical advantage of a gear can be gained by doing intermeshing gears in motion.
(Speed A * Number of teeth A) = (Speed B * Number of teeth B)
This ratio is known as the gear ratio where 'A' and 'B' are gears of same shape or different shape.
Generally the units of gear ratio are measured using gear radius. Since gears are rough circles they cannot have ratio.
Two gears in meshing pairs help us to derive a pitch radius. This radius cannot help us to derive the output speed perfectly .Generally speaking the torque ratio is equal to the ratio of radii whereas the velocity ratio is vice versa. There is no complete transfer of energy from torque to velocity as a varied amount of friction is experienced due to the teethes. They also cause some latency. Technology is striving its best to bring this velocity ratio to consistency by varying the teeth shape. The ideal shape is the involutes one.
On the contrary, there are misleading cases where the term gear is referenced for parts of machines just because they perform equivalent tasks like them.
