Willow Tree
A Merry Christmas With Willow Tree
Internationally renowned artist Susan Lordi applied her craft in textiles before starting a journey that would end in the art that she produces today. In 2000 Susan started sculpting her Willow Tree ornaments and figurines. The figures are totally different from where she started her career as an artist. And yet, years after leaving varsity she revealed that her college notebooks contained the drawings and doodles that would one day be the impetus of Willow Tree.
The inspiration for Willow Tree is drawn from chums, family, and individuals that Susan knows. She is an observer of the relationships taking place round her. From those discoveries she is able to create the beautiful pieces that make up the collections that are offered.
The ornaments, figures, and boxes which make up the Willow Tree collections are electrifying and give an individual the opportunity to share a feeling or emotion with another person simply. Each sculpture is inspired by an event or an event that can be easily shared in sculpture.
When an individual first sees the Willow Tree ornaments, they may think that these are wood sculptures. However , the ornaments are made from a mildew made from the sculpture that Susan makes. The ornaments and figures are sculpted from clay that Susan works on in her Missouri studio. When a decoration or figure has been finished it is sent to China.
Once in China a mould is made of the sculpture. A resin is poured into the mildew which gives an actual reproduction of the sculpture with each knife and sculpting etch on the figure. After being removed from the mold it is Hand Painted with four layers of thin water based paint. This paint is lead free and permits some of the ornaments to be used as cake toppers for weddings.
On completion of the painting process the sculptures are cured and sent to their destinations. Some stores have sold the Willow Tree line since its inception. The ornaments are also available through many Internet Sites. You may find that the figures and ornaments are also available on Susan's Willow Tree site and the Demdaco website.
The figures are made using one of 4 skin tones and different hair colors. Susan is now working on expanding her collection to incorporate other ethnicities in the sculptures. Her "Child of My Heart" figure is a tribute to a mate who is very involved with international adoption.
Susan's other inspirations are ballet, modern dance, and nature. You will find that many of the figures hold a little natural item that represents some of the best of human qualities. A bird represents healing in the sculpts, flowers represent beauty, and rosemary is often used in the sculptures to represent remembrance.
The ornaments and figures aren't made to be lovable or fanciful. They are made to speak emotions and feelings in their simplest human form. They suggest simplicity, peace, serenity, healing, and elegance. There is minimal color used on the figures and no decorations to dress the figures up.
There are several million of the ornaments and figures sold every year. Annually Susan introduces a new ornament and statuette. From the time that she begins sculpting till an ornament or figure is ready to be market is about a year. Each detail of the figures are precisely detailed and practiced before production starts on the sculptures.
The ornaments and figures express pure emotion thru the gestures and position of the body and head of the sculpture. The sculpts do not contain facial details and rely on the movement, caress, and gradually angling of a head to convey the specified emotion.
the simpleness of the sculptures allow a person to see themselves in each figure. When given as a gift, the ornaments and figures regularly serve as the needed inducement and inspiration to get someone thru a hard period or make a needed adjustment.
Many of us find that the ornaments offer a wonder way to start a family practice. Susan has chiseled many various ornaments that are sought by collectors everywhere. The angels are small and fragile. They convey the message of the person giving the present and are a wonderful way to make a vacation tree a completely unique feature in a room.
The delicate and soft shades of the angels, their wire wings, and the gesture or activity they do, make them part of a gorgeous and notable scene. These delightful sculptures make wonderful collector's pieces or wonderful gifts that may give the recipient years of enjoyment.

What happens to the root system of a willow tree after I cut it down? Will the tree grow back?
Our willow tree is about 8 feet away from our house and we're concerned about the safety of our foundation and pipes. We're thinking about cutting it down, but would like to be sure we don't need to pull up the entire root system.
Just about any tree can be invasive.I am not an advocate of cutting/removing established trees.Perhaps seeking advice of an arborist may help you make a determination.
Most people believe that in the winter a tree goes completely dorm-ate,wrong.Tree roots are always seeking water 24/7,hence sewer pipe problems.
I have been a concrete wall/flatwork contractor for 25 years and have seen some real horror stories. On more than one occasion I have had to replace basement slabs in finished basements. You would be amazed at the roots under the slabs from trees 75 ft away from house.
Should you have to remove the tree stump grinding is a viable option after cutting.
Good luck
