What are the legal procedures when buying a car in Western Australia?
I'm emigrating to Perth in a month, and wondered what I need to do when I buy a car, ie registering the car with the motor vehicles dept, insuring it, roadworthy certificate etc. I can find most of this stuff online from official websites, but actual advice from WA residents would be a lot more useful!
Also, do you pay sales tax on used cars in WA?
Good news, once a car is registered it doesnt need a yearly road safety certificate...
You do pay stamp duty once you've bought your vehicle, thats a one of fee.
You pay a fee once a year which is the same sort of thing as tax duty here, except it also covers you for thrid party insurance for personal damges that you may cause. It's not actually law in Aussie to have any other insurance policy... Although i would advise getting fully comp to be on the safe side as if you cause an accident you could be sued... HBF are fairly cheap insurers for car insurance...
The Aussie version od DVLA is the 'Department of planing and infrastructure' these are the guys you register your ownership of the vehicle with and pay you fees each year. I have a toyota Hiace and payed about $450 a year, thats your tax and insurance all in one and no MOT is required.

When you buy a vehicle, you have to send your forms off to them, or you can go to the departmant and register your new ownership and pay your stamp....
If you are buying a used vehicle, try checking out the Kuokka magazine, it is released every thursday and has lods of cars in it.... Dont trust the used car dealers, there are a lot of dodgy cut and shutes in the trade...
