How Train horn kits Are Mounted
It is amazing to note that rail companies enjoy plenty of freedom when it comes to placement of train horn kits on the locomotives. Such an eventuality makes the mounting of the horns appear similar to the manner in which car horns are mounted. The guiding principle here is normally the way in which the train is made and how it operates. This therefore the horn placed in different locations. Such placement also helps to increase the effectiveness of how the horn functions.
The most common method of mounting train horn kits is by placing them atop the train’s cabin. Trains where the cabin is significantly smaller and lower than the locomotives will usually make use of this feature. This is a vantage position from where the sound is sure to be carried miles away into the distance in which the train is heading. This is achieved by directing the mouth of the horn to where the train is headed. This is a position where many horns will be placed.
Many European are mounting their train horn kits way behind the cabin. However, this position has many comparisons with the traditional mounting position discussed above. The only major difference is the tendency to rely less on the front or main cab. However, the horns are placed is such a way that their mouths are directly above the locomotive’s edge. This gives the sound more power as the space into which it is directed is bigger than in the previous case.
Another position of horn placement closely related to this is the ahead the locomotive over the front cab. The train horn kits in this case are mounted on the front side of the first locomotive pointing directly in front of the train. This is an effective strategy of increasing the effectiveness of the horn.
Locomotives that have shorter hoods always have a different way of maximizing the sound output from their train horn kits. They opt to position the horns far way from the operating cab. This serves to lessen the impact of any noise that could be emanating from this lead cab. In such case, the horn may be mounted on the sides of the locomotive in which case there could be tow sets of horns. Furthermore, the horn could also be placed on the last locomotive. This can be tricky more so if the train has several locomotives since sound takes some time to cover space.
The newest strategy of placement of horns is based on an opposite form of reasoning from placing it away from the operating cab. Train crews feel the placement of the horn atop it or next to it makes it too loud and thereby noisy. They therefore advocate for placement of train horn kits far towards the center of the train. This is also done to discourage vandalism or theft of such horns. However it compromises the effectiveness of the sound coming out of the horn.

Is the Union Pacific Steam Locomotive 844 a passenger train, and if not are any steam locomotives in the USA?
UP's 844 is a high speed passenger locomotive. It was delivered to the UP in 1944. After 1960 UP kept her in service making special occasion runs. Around 2001 844 was pulled out of service for a major overhaul. She has been running since 2005.
UP has another famous steamer in service, Challenger 3985. This articulated monster has a 4-6-6-4 wheel arrangement. It was delivered to the UP in 1943 and was used to haul fast freight. At about 900,000 pounds, 3985 cruised at about 70MPH, occasionally pulling passenger trains. It used to burn coal, but UP converted it to oil. After it was retired in the late 50's, it sat in storage until it was restored by UP employees, who volunteered their time. 3985 ran again after 1981.
There are many other operating steam locomotives in the United States. Milwaukee Road's 261 operates out of Minneapolis. Illinois Railway Museum has several steamers under restoration. Steamtown in northeatern Pennsylvania obviously runs steam. Southern Pacific's 4449 is running out west. Grand Canyon Railroad operates steam, but I think it is being rebuilt right now. Motive power is provided by Alco PA's, which are a treat to see, too.
