Can someone explain Zeno's Paradox of Motion?
So far everything I've looked up on it seems really confusing. I don't understand how Achilles will never be able to reach his reptilian opponent. Explain this to me like I'm an idiot because I clearly am on this topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeno's_paradoxes#Achilles_and_the_tortoise
So what I gathered was... Achilles wants to race the tortoise from point A to point B, and Achilles sportingly gave the tortoise a head start since the tortoise is slow. So the tortoise starts at point C, and Achilles will have to reach point C before he beats the tortoise. But when he reaches point C, the tortoise moved on to point D. And when Achilles finally reach point D, the tortoise has moved onto point E. So following that logic, Achilles can never catch up? Yet they are not running at an equal rate, so shouldn't Achilles eventually surpass whatever point the tortoise is heading? So why can't Achilles ever reach the tortoise? I am very confused.
I will do my best to explain. Zeno's paradox is counter-intuitive to nearly everyone because we disregard it's logic every day. Another simpler variation of Zeno's paradox asserts that a man walking toward a wall will never reach it. Why? The logic goes like this: he will eventually walk 1/2 the distance to the wall. Once he has walked half the distance, he will eventually walk 1/2 the new distance. And so on, ad nauseum, always having another half-distance to cover. Of course we all walk to walls everyday, so the counterargument to this logic is "proof by demonstration".
