Time Passenger Car
Every time when I enter my car from either the driver's side or the passenger's side, I hear a creaking sound.

The creaking sounds like some springs at the bottom of the car is rusted. My car is a 2000 Volkswagen Passat. I weigh about 155 pounds, so I'm not heavy enough to crush the car.

When I rock the car up and down by pushing down on the trunk of the car, I hear that noise also.

I suspect that it is the car's suspension that is at fault, probably has rusted springs.

Can anyone here tell me if that is so?

Also, can I just use some WD40 to get rid of the rust?

Is the car safe to drive? Should I take it to a mechanic?

Thanks for any help.

As far as the car being safe, if the creaks are excessively loud or make you nervous, or the car feels unstable in any way, definitely have it checked immediately.

I would just get under the car and do a visual inspection to see if you can find where exactly the problem is. If you see something broken or disconnected, it will be easy to tell the mechanic. Check the lubricated joints. The problem could be as simple as needing more grease (a lube job.)

If you see excessive rust, you may want to think about trying one of the many products available to treat underbody rust. There is a spray made by a few different companies that changes the chemical makeup of the rust and converts it into an almost paint-like surface. WD-40 does indeed work wonders for freeing up rusted parts, and could very well stop the creaking sounds if you find the source, but it won't really get rid of rust or keep it from spreading.

Also, I would not recommend spraying WD-40 on lubricated joints in the suspension system. You need that thick grease you see, and the WD-40 could dissolve some of it and cause more wear and problems with your suspension.
