Tank Car
How long can you store gas in a car tank?

I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has a full tank of gas and has been sitting for a year. We have not used it because we bought another SUV. Can we have it tested so we can syphon it for use or is it stale?

Well the gas is probably good, as the tank was really "full"??
If gas is pretty low in tank, it could be pretty bad (smell fumes from filler hole)! Modern gas is pretty much "garbage", and will "rot down" in as little as 3 months in things like lawnmowers, and snowblowers etc.- with small engines on them! Thousands of small engines go to "junk' yearly because of this, (and people don't know anything about engines, - so they buy new ones)!! This can be solved by using a "fuel stabilizer", - such as "STABIL", which is available almost everywhere, - including WalMart!........... But it is too late for that now!

Now about "siphoning" fuel out! This is not easily done with later cars because of the "fume seal cap" that must be opened when filler hose at gas station is inserted! Also hoses go in easily sometimes, but do not come back out! You could of course remove the fill fitting, and pull it off tank connection and take whole thing off and go through there (which is a lot of workl)! I would try disconnecting hose somewhere undernreath -- Like at fuel filter (if in rear) -- gravity flow would them make it flow out more easily! (of course (fuel pumps in tank) on more modern cars generally makes a solid fuel line to front, and makes it harder! --- It is worth checking out anyway! If this doesn't work, "do what you gotta do"!! A smaller hose inserted to siphon will be easier to get out again than one that fits farily tight in hole, - it will drain a little slower, but if you use two cans, you can have one dumped long before the other one fills, so that you only need to get "started once"!

Depeding on how bad it smells, I would only use a couple gallons per tankful till it is all used up!, But if it smells about the same as "new gas" then you are ok!, Just use it up as you can get in tank!
