I've got what appears to be four sick fish, can anyone help me figure out how to treat them?
Okay I've got a huge tank with 3 goldfish, 1 fantail, 1 plecostumus, and some type of little white catfish guy. The little cat-guy is fine, and the plec is fine, but I'm a little concerned about my goldfish.
I'm pretty sure one has fin-rot, his back fin is really ragged looking at the edges and he's got some little blood spots/ulcerations, the fantail has what looks like a blister at the base of his rear fin, one of the other ones has lost two scales, and the other has some scales that are pale but not gone.
I've treated for ick and that didn't do much other than making the nitrate/nitrite levels rise since I had to turn off the filters. But I don't think it's ick anyway because the white/pale places cover a whole scale here and there, no larger or smaller. They look just like faded scales here and there all over the fish, and none appear swollen or sunken at all.
But with the fin rot developing, I'm not sure what to do. Feed medicated food? Retreat for ick? Both? Any ideas?
Hello again-first of all this is not Ick, you would recognise that because your fish would look like they had been sprinkled with salt-pouring medications in to your tank is not a good idea unless you are treating a specific illness. I'm afraid I have no experience of treating fin rot so I won't presume to guess on medications.
I would suggest you check your parameters & keep up with regular partial water changes-this may be the result of an ammonia spike. Also it would be a good idea to add a little salt to your tank to aid the healing process-the attached link tells you about dosages. Remember to only use aquarium, rock or sea salt.
Regarding the scales-from what you say it sounds just like were lost & they are regrowing-scales usually show lighter than the main colour of the fish when they regrow & will colour back up after they have fully formed which may take several months so I wouldn't worry about that.
