The layout of the track itself is an important aspect of any model railway. There are four basic methods of arranging the track such as the continuous loop which is a circle or oval with trains going round and round; point to point, a line with a station at every end with trains going from one station to another; out and back is a pear shaped track, with trains leaving the station then going round a reversing loop and coming back to the same station; shunting is either a station, a motive power depot or a yard.

lionel fasttrack layouts?
I'm wanting to set up a large train layout...mostly mountains, some towns. i've failed at ho and n gauge because I always have problems laying the track. I'm thinking about going to lionel and the fasttrack option. any opinions on using fasttrack? can anyone recommend a book with lots of layouts that will tell me what track needs purchased, ect?
the train is secondary to the scene. i guess i'm looking for computer software specific to lionel fastrack
First question is this, where's the fire? you can't rush putting track down in ANY scale.
My suggestion is to find a local chapter or club that does model railroading. Get someone to show you what your doing wrong. Maybe help them on their layout to get the feel for how it is done correctly.
I have a friend that has a layout that takes the WHOLE basement of his house, except for the water heater and furnace. He had a stroke and he STILL put in his own track. If he can do it there is not any reason you can't.
