Where can I find this type of town in Oregon?
I need a setting for a story I am writing. I want it to take place in Oregon. The town needs to be of medium size with beautiful landscape and a lot of "country" type scenery. Any towns out there fit the bill?
I would probably choose Hood River in the Columbia River Gorge. It is a town of maybe 8-10k people, has some of the best scenery in the world and when you start to head south of town, there are farms and orchards throughout the Hood River Valley. The main part of town is kind of modern and trendy looking, but the views of the river and Mount Adams are great. When you head down the valley, the scenery is stunning.
You might also consider The Dalles. It's a little bigger in population, but has bit more rural feel, since there are wheat farms, ranches and cherry orchards surrounding the town. The views there are also good, especially from the college and big park on the top of the hill. It has a downtown with a more historical "western" feel to it, also. It is one of the most historic towns in Oregon with a lot of old houses and it is kind of a central location.
Pendleton would probably be my third choice. Probably not as scenic IMO, but very rural and it is has a good "country" or "western" feel to it.
