Environmentally friendly scenic design has become increasingly more important. Fortunately, making them greener also makes them more affordable. It also allows for creativity that would have been unaffordable with hard sets for the typical user. One major trend is doing away with wasted expense and hassle of transporting heavy scenic props. Stretch your budget with stretch fabric. Scenic design created by stretch/tension fabric is not only affordable, it’s lightweight, easy to set-up and strike, comes in any color and size, and provides more creativity and versatility than you could have ever imagined.
Stretch fabric structures can have high impact in any room – whether it’s for the stage backdrop, around the room as walls or sculptured dividers. For rooms with very high ceilings they have great impact as freestanding column structures. They make great entrances as tunnels or arches. The combination of lighting and stretch fabric structures produces high impact décor.
Projection is cheaper, brighter and sharper than ever
Projection has gotten cheaper, brighter and sharper allowing for creative use of non-traditional projection surfaces like waterfalls, waffle textured fabrics, and walls. Any surface, any shape, anywhere.

Ceiling washes, pin spotting and gobos
Another type of lighting gaining in popularity is ceiling washes. This decorative lighting can transform a room. Using patterns, whether subtle or intense, produce an artwork effect. The light reflects off the color of the ceiling and can cause the room to glow.
Pin spotting produces a very dramatic effect. The light is shot downward through pin spotted light bars. It’s probably most commonly used to highlight specific areas such as floral arrangements, table settings, or displays. But it’s also an excellent alternative to harsh straight-down lights for any event. Since the light is diffused and a little fuzzy it makes the light appear to spill around the objects in the room. Pin spots can be color-coordinated and provide excellent accent color without being overpowering.
The use of gobos is not new but they are being used more and more often. They are perfect for image projection, from names, logos or graphics. For such a small object they generate great dimension! Gobos can be crafted most affordably in aluminum. You can even purchase stock gobos for additional savings. But if it’s an image you plan to use with great regularity or for extended lengths of time, you might consider paying a small amount more to have the gobo created out of glass. Glass gobos will produce the crispest images and are far more durable.
High definition for highest quality
In these days of virtual reality and 3-D imaging it has become increasingly more challenging to capture people’s attention visually. Therefore, although it doesn’t fall on the “cheap” list, high definition for production, playback and presentation could be just what you need to create a real show stopping presentation. Because of its impact you might consider paring back other items to make room for high definition and make it your focal point.
If high definition just isn’t possible, think wide screen! Even a 16’x9’ screen can do wonders to grab and hold your audience’s attention.
