Using Referrals For Business
I don't agree that the saying "you get what you pay for" applies to advertising. Some advertising is ridiculously expensive and is not all that helpful. It is important to get all you can out of what you spend. Sometimes it will take some work as well. You can pay people to do a lot of things but you have to do some things on your own.
Giant corporations can afford to blow wads of cash. The smaller fish have to be more frugal. You can do some good down to earth marketing right in your own neighborhood. There are all sorts of small scale marketing that you may have never thought of. That is why it is always good to do research before embarking on new territory. You really don't have to pay someone to get ideas for you.
A referral can be very good for marketing. You have someone who knows your business and is happy with the way things are run. They could bring new people in to try you out. This works great for a gym type of place. If a paying customer brings in a friend to try the place out then they could get a percentage off of their monthly enrollment fee. If that person signs up then they could get a bigger discount or have the chance to get one of your services for free, like a pedicure or spa treatment. This would be very motivational.
Name recognition goes a long way. Have you ever heard a conversation where people were saying that they had heard of a place and yeah, they had heard good things about them. To get this a nice business sign helps and items with you name or logo is good to. Make sure to spend a little on the sign in front of your place. There is no bigger turn off than a messy homemade sign job. If you want to get really hip. hire a local graffiti artist to make your sign noticeable. You could also have the same kid give you some good ideas for a customized T-shirt. That would be trendy.
Even though your grand opening was long ago you could still invite people into your business with an open house. Better yet, if you have space you could have a monthly art show. Even if you have something like a print shop or nail salon, it is a possibility. Every place of business has walls. You can push tables to the side and offer the space to the local university for their art classes to showcase work. They will provide refreshments and you just need to be on hand to talk to everyone about your daily business.
