Planning your Model Railroad track layout
Model railroad track plans are one topic that always gets a lot of attention from railway enthusiasts and Model Train collectors. The plan is vital to the success of the model railroad that is being created. This doesn’t matter whether it’s a very basic shape or if the track layout if designed around a real city or suburb.
People interested in collecting and building model railroads are fanatical about the details. They are determined to get everything perfect and leave no stone unturned in their quest for the perfect railroad track.
Many people advise others on what the best layout should be. This is true when it comes to the beginner in the hobby. Many people advise beginners to use sectional track while others think a flex track is the best option.
It is often best to just keep things simple when you are new the model train hobby. It is best to design and build a model rail track that makes you comfortable and which you know you can comfortably create. There is nothing worse that starting to build a model rail track layout and having to change plans during the construction.
This usually happens because you have tried to create something that requires more skill that you currently have. You can find books and many other articles online that give you ideas for track layouts. You can use these basic ideas and then expand upon them later.
Some of the most popular tracks are the best to get started with. They are simple and almost anyone can construct them by following basic instructions. This means that you can have a good quality track laid out in a shorter amount of time. You then spend more of your time watching the model trains and dealing with them.
Remember that before you pickup one section of track, you need to have the design ready. You must know the model railway layout you are going to use. This first step cannot be overlooked.
If you are very new to the hobby then the best way to get started is with a basic oval track. This is the one that most people begin with. It is tried and tested and will enable you to test out and develop your track making skills. It is also very cheap and affordable to buy and set up.
You usually won’t need any help in order to construct the oval. What’s also great about the oval is that the trains can keep running continuously as there are no straight sections in the track. This is often one of the most complicated things for beginners to learn.
The only problem with the oval is that it is not very realistic. However, as you are beginning in the hobby, you need to get started somewhere. So, start with an oval and then build up from there. Once you have this done, you can start to add more scenery and other trains to the track. You can then start to expand the track as you skill grows.

Is BNSF railroad the Santa Fe railroad and the Burlington Northern railroad combined? Did one buy the other?
I was just wondering if the BNSF railroad is the Sante fe railroad and the Burlington Northern railroad combined. The reason I want to know is I want to know if it would look ok to have BNSF railroad locomotives and Sante Fe locomotves and Burlington northern locomotives all together on one Model Train Layout. thanks
Yes, BNSF is from the merger of BN and ATSF. I'm not sure who bought whom, however.
As for whether or not it would be alright to have BN and ATSF models along side each other with BNSF-I say absolutely. There are still a fair number of of both BN and ATSF locomotives out there. It wasn't but a couple of weeks ago that I saw a Santa Fe Warbonnet Dash 9 here locally, doubleheaded with a BNSF locomotive. I see Burlington Northern Dash 9s and the like around here all the time, too.
