The Little Rome of America
The area called Brookland evolved in the early 1870s, when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad opened its western branch line in this area. The rail line was situated alongside the fine 1840 Greek Revival farmhouse, Brooks Mansion, home of Colonel Jehiel Brooks. In the early days, Brookland, was a community of wooden houses – from Victorian Queen Anne to Craftsman-style bungalows – attracted government workers, a few Smithsonian Institution scientists, and people of many ethnic backgrounds who shared the Catholic faith.
The Franciscan Church in Brookland is one of the focal points of the neighborhood. This remarkable Byzantine-style church, modeled after Istanbul's famed Hagia Sofia, is situated on 44 landscaped acres. Built in 1899, it is preserved by the Franciscans who have long been charged with maintaining the shrines important to Catholics in the Holy Land. Visitors have a chance to tour replicas of many important places in the Holy Land, including Roman catacombs, the Grotto of Lourdes and the Garden of Gethsemane.
The The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the largest Catholic Church in the Americas. Mixing Byzantine-Romanesque architecture with contemporary mosaics and sculpture, the National Shrine is a testament to the multicultural character of Catholicism. Many of its more than 70 devotional areas were the gifts of ethnic groups from lands including Africa, Croatia, Cuba, Czech Republic, India, Ireland, Lithuania, Philippines, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
Hotels in Washington DC usually offer guided tours of the important sights that offer insight into the area’s heritage. Though there are many Washington DC hotels only a few can be found in the Brookland area, a fact attributed the residential and religious nature of the area.
