Game viewing safaris in South Africa: our top three destinations
Tours to South Africa normally centre on wildlife and game viewing. Although our beautiful country boasts a wide array of attractions such as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, unspoilt beaches and vibrant cities, it is our wildlife and scenery that draws the biggest crowds. There are few places in the world that has such a large concentration of wildlife and there are various national parks and conservation areas throughout the country that serve to introduce visitors to our amazing natural heritage.
The only question is, with so many venues in offer, how do you choose your South African safari destination? We have taken the liberty to compile a list of our top three destinations for safaris in South Africa. These are:
1. The Kruger National Park: A natural choice, the Kruger is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s largest visitors’ attractions and with good reason. Comprising of a whopping two million hectares of unspoilt bushveld and wetlands, this stunning nature reserve is home to 336 types of trees, 49 kinds of fish, 34 different amphibians, 114 varieties of reptile, 507 species of birds and an incredible 147 types of mammals.
If that isn’t enough to whet your appetite, maybe the wide array of accommodation choices will. The park caters for everyone from high-powered executives who enjoy the finer things in life (we recommend Singita Ebony Lodge) to families who want to rough it (we recommend Talamati Bushveld Camp). Whatever your accommodation of choice, you are sure to find a suitable venue within the Kruger.
Visitors can partake in daily game drives or –hikes and even have access to various historical and archaeological sites.
2. Entabeni Private Game Reserve: The Entabeni Private Game Reserve is situated on 12 000 hectares of malaria-free land that is home to a wide variety of wildlife, not least of which the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard). Five different, yet interconnected ecosystems provide an unrivalled scenic experience; while three unique accommodation venues offer guests a choice of luxury lodging.
Safaris in South Africa are exciting under any circumstances, but even more so at Entabeni. Here, visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to recreational activities. Enjoy a riveting Balloon safari and take in the scenery from up high or sign up for a horseback safari and get in touch with nature in the way of our forebears. Alternatively, opt for a romantic evening of stargazing at the Astro Boma or head over to the wellness centre for a rejuvenating beauty treatment.
3. Pilanesberg National Park: Situated a hop, skip and a jump away from Sun City (South Africa’s premium resort destination), Pilanesberg National Park is a singular tourist attraction surrounded by picturesque valleys. The Pilanesberg region was previously degraded and depleted of game due to commercial farming endeavours, but after an extensive land rehabilitation project that involved game restocking was implemented the area was reclaimed and turned into the wildlife sanctuary it is today.
The region was formed by volcanic eruptions 1 200 million years ago and as such its unique geological composition provides diverse habitats that support a wide array of animals, including Black Rhino, Roan, Sable, Tsessebe and Wild Dog.
Visitors can expect comfortable rest camps, well-trained rangers and a beautiful setting.
And there you have it, three fantastic venues to choose from for your safari in South Africa. Tours in South Africa are a fantastic cultural experience and something every person should encounter at least once in their lives. Book your place today!
