The Six Best Bathroom Scales
So you are looking for the best, most accurate bathroom scale available. In other words you want a scale which is a) at most no more than a pound off, b) displays the same weight no matter how you stand on it, and c) displays the same weight no matter when you stand on it. While many scales will claim to meet these criteria, user experience doesn't always match up with manufacturer claims.
As such, it is interesting to hear what real people say when asked to recommend a high-quality, accurate bathroom scale. I therefore searched online and came up with the following list of the best bathroom scales based on recommendations from real people on sites such as Google Groups, Yahoo Answers and Ask MetaFilter.
First I noted which brands and/or types of scales people thought were the best. Here is the list:
1) Tanita digital scale. Recommended by a number of people.
2) A physicians scale (you know, a scale with manually adjusted, sliding weights). They are big, but accurate. What's more, you don't need your glasses to actually see how much you weigh and you know that 30 years from now it will still be around.
3) A Taylor digital scale. However, don't get the glass Taylor scales, they aren't suppose to be very good.
4) Hammacher Schlemer Best Precision Measurement Digital Scale
5) HealthOMeter (with a 10 year lithium battery).
From these general recommendations, I proceeded to create a list of the eight best bathroom scales. To create this list I went to Amazon.com to see which particular models of bathroom scales were the most popular on these sites. I searched according to each type of scale mentioned in the section above (i.e., I searched for Tanita digital scale, physicians scale, etc.). I noted also the price and reviews of each scale. Here is the list that I came up with (note: all data is of Dec. 3, 2007):

How do I fix a "stuck" mechanical precision balance beam scale?
I have an old Pelouze metric precision scale (model R-47) that has left & right trays and weights in grains and grams. It used to work perfectly, but it's been sitting in a closet for a few years, and when I took it out to use it the scale seems "stuck". I adjusted the counterpoise nut and even the "sensitizer" disc under the beam, and I can get the scale to balance out at zero (where the 2 red lines in the center of the beam are even), but as soon as I gently tap either the left or right tray, the scale dips and never goes back to zero - it just stops and stays "stuck" and unbalanced. I gently cleaned it, oiled all the moving parts, and jiggled it around, but I can't fix it. It used to work perfectly, and it hasn't been jostled or bumped around. It's just been sitting in a closet for a few years. I even called the Pelouze Scale Company, but their records only go back 5 years and this scale it at least 25 years old. Does anybody know what more I can do to get working properly?
Cleaning is probably the solution. Depending on the type of materials used in the pivots they might be better off without oil (glass or agate for example) but if they are designed to be oiled the the old oil may have become gummy over the years and may need a solvent to remove the deposit. By the way, WD-40 is infamous for eventually becoming gummy, but it is a good solvent, so WD-40 followed by, perhaps, alcohol might do a good job, then if the bearings need oil, a light instrument oil. You might also check to see if anything has become bent and is rubbing anywhere, especially check the damper mechanism if it has one
