Giving A Train Set As A Gift - How To Select The Right One
A train set has always been high on the list of popular gifts for young children - especially for boys, but there's no reason why young girls can't enjoy them as well. It is also a toy which appeals to a wide range of ages - many enthusiasts will continue their model railway hobby as adults.
That's one of the advantages of train sets. They are definitely a higher end toy and, as such, tend to cost a little more than some of the other toys available. However, they seem to enjoy an appeal which is more enduring than a lot of other types of toy - so they can represent excellent value for money. Video games for example, are frequently completed by children in no more than a few days. When they are completed then they are done with and they probably won't be used again. On the other hand, with a little care and attention, a high quality train set will last for many years and will be providing fun and enjoyment long after the latest video game has been recycled.
If you are concerned that toy like a train set may be considered as old fashioned rather than traditional in today's digital environment, then there is a relatively quick and easy test that you can perform. Simply ask any grown man whether or not they can still remember their first train set. Watch the dream like look on their faces as they travel back through the years to relive the excitement of tip-toeing into the family living room on Christmas morning and finding their new train set nestled under the tree.
If you do decide to give a train set as a gift then be sure to take the recipient's age into consideration. Hornby Trains produce sets which are intended for younger children. You can find a train set which is based upon the Rev. W. Awdry's ever popular Thomas The Tank Engine which is an ideal starter set for youngsters. For older children, a set such as the Hogwarts Express - based on the Harry Potter films - might prove to be a more suitable choice.
As well as the locomotives and carriages, you may want to give some consideration to the layout of the track itself. Watching a train which simply goes round and round on a circular or oval track will quickly become boring for younger children. A couple of sidings, where the train can back into in order to pick up important goods for transportation would be good for the youngsters - a platform or platforms where the kids can make the passengers get on and off the train might also add to the fun. In general, younger children will probably enjoy a busy, bustling freight set more than a passenger set.
Older children may find the high level of detail in model trains appealing. A close similarity between the Hogwarts Express on the big screen and the smaller version on their bedroom floor may be something that appeals to them. Whatever age your intended gift recipient is, the addition of a few accessories will probably increase their enjoyment. A few farmyard animals, some trees, tunnels, buildings and some miniature people can really help to bring their train set to life.
A train set is a wonderful gift for a child - even in this day and age. It will produce many hours of enjoyment and will eventually be a fond childhood memory for the recipient in years to come.

Are First Great Western crap, or what?
My daily commute is getting worse every day. The new timetable is a joke, they can't run it on time and when the trains do turn up they are too small and hence overcrowded.
Added to this, one of the ticket machines at my home station has been faulty for 6 weeks -- I've told Farce Grate Worsten about it FOUR times now, and each time all that happens is that I get the same grovelly apologetic email telling me how they aim to fix faults within 24 hours. It's got to the stage where I've written to the Chief Exec of FGW about it, and my MP. It's a joke.
'Great Western'? Brunel must be spinning in his grave. This company couldn't run a Hornby train set, never mind a passenger service. They should be stripped of the franchise NOW!
Anyone else agree? Got any horror stories to share?
Crap is putting it mildly.
First Great Western is part of the First Group and their bus sunsidaries have the worse record for vehicle maintenance for any of the large transport groups.
In the last five years, First PMT, First Glasgow and First Edinburgh have each had the number of vehicles on their operating licences cut by 25-33%.
I really do not know why, with such an appalling record, the Government continues to gift rail franchises to First.
Continue to write to your MP, but send a copy to the Rail Regulator and the Minister of Transport (Civil servants HATE getting letters!).
Also send a copy to Moir Lockhead, Chief Executive, First Group, 395 King Street, Aberdeen (Try asking Moir if he would allow his herd of Highland cattle to be treated in a similar way - he owns a farm in Aberdeenshire!)
