question about lionel trains?
my grandpa just got his old lionel trains fixed up and gave them to me and i need to know how to hook up the track to the controller
on the little lockon thingy theres a 1 and a 2 and on the controller thats called a zw theres a u and a and i need to know what they connect too like the u to the 1 or to the 2 and so on so i dont catch the house on fire or something
thanks if you can help
By convention, terminal U is connected to the outer rail, #2 on the lockon, and the terminal for the throttle you're using(A, B, C, or D) goes to the center rail, #1 on the lockon. All of the U terminals are internally connected, so you don't have to use the U post right above the throttle post you're using.
In general, however, this is mostly irrelevant for a simple loop of track on the floor. It really only becomes significant when you're coordinating a larger layout with multiple track, transformers, and/or hooking up certain accessories. Hooking the wires backwards may also prevent the whistle control from operating the whistle or horn of locomotives made in the past 20 years. Hooking the wires up backwards most certainly won't start a fire.
In order to keep from starting a fire, though, I'd suggest taking the following precautions with your 50+ year old ZW:
1. Carefully check the cord for any signs of fraying, dry rot, or any other damage. If any of this is present DO NOT plug it in until the cord is replaced. Doing so is relatively straightforward, but unless you're overly comfortable doing this sort of thing, locate either a local authorized Lionel repair station(there's a directory on the website) or local independent toy train repairman. The cost to do so should be minimal.
2. Be sure you have a working circuit breaker. To test the circuit breaker, connect a short piece of 14 gauge wire across terminals U and A. Plug the transformer in, and then crank throttle A about halfway up(keep your hand on it). The transformer will hum very, very loudly. Within 15 seconds(as per the service papers) you should hear a loud click, at which point the humming will stop and the red light may illuminate. This will tell you that the circuit breaker is working properly-it should reset itself in a few seconds. If, however, nothing happens after 15 seconds, immediately kill the power, and take the transformer to an authorized Lionel service station before attempting to use it. A bad circuit breaker can send the transformer, and your house, up in smoke.
3. It should go without saying-never leave the transformer plugged in and unattended for ANY length of time.
4. Remove the top(four screws and it lifts right off) and look at the copper wiper arms that rest on the coils. Each of these should have a small carbon roller at the end that actually touches the coil-there should be no copper to copper contact. Move each throttle, and watch it's connected arm. The motion should be smooth as glass, and you should see the roller rolling. If anything feels like it's scraping, and or you see something sliding across the roller rather than rolling, do not use that throttle. Doing so will cause irreparable damage. You can continue to use the transformer with this problem, but just don't use that throttle-most commonly, this will be the right most "A" throttle. Rollers are cheap and easy to replace, so see your authorized Lionel service station for an easy fix.
The ZW is a superb transformer-in my opinion, it's one of the best Lionel has ever made. Take care of it, and it will last another 50 years.
