Tapeless Shooting
Shooting video with tapes (whether mini-dv, HDV, Digibeta or any of the other formats out there) seems like such an antiquated thing to do these days, but I am finding it hard to make the transition to tapeless shooting. However, formats such as Sony’s XDCAM do sound tempting. Fewer moving parts, longer recording times, quick transfer to harddrives and the ability to shoot in extreme conditions do seem too good to turn down. I have always been a bit wary of just recording to a card or drive, because of the regularity with which many computers crash, but the pros are starting to outweigh the cons and the progression in the technology seems to have resolved most of these problems.
Therefore, we at Cass Productions in Hampshire have started making the transition. The first step, is to use the HVR-MRC 1K solid-state accessory with our Z-5’s, which allows us to simultaneously record to tape and flash card. This will give us peace of mind that there is a back-up DV tape version of everything we record – just in case! If successful, we will then start moving over to the Sony XDCAM format. The Sony PMW EX3 seems to be the perfect camera for us if when we do switch over to solid-state.
