what meatal did napoleons imperial guard use on thier uniforms?
i am painting a model of a napoleonic guard drummer and cannot work out if the buttons,buckles and other parts are brass,gold or copper.
Napoleon's Imperial Guard was actually an entire army in itself, including infantry, cavalry, artillery, sappers, engineers and support troops such as a medical corps.
Depending on which particular regiment your model portrays, the buttons would be white metal (not silver) or brass (not gold). The Sailors of the Guard wore dark blue uniforms with brass buttons, for example, while Sappers of the Guard had white metal buttons.
I guess that your model will represent either a Foot Grenadier or Foot Chasseur of the Old Guard (there were mounted versions of both) - these wore the familiar grenadier bearskin caps but in the Chasseurs this cap was without the copper plate on the front -

Officers of both units wore gold or silver epaulettes, pioneers had all brass metalwork, while the buttons of ordinary rank-and-file troops were of brass.
