Driving from Milwaukee, WI to Los Angeles, CA - Tips, recommendations?
I am considering (solo) driving from Milwaukee to Los Angeles early next month. This will be my first cross-country road trip and can use some tips, advices, and general notes. I have taken road trips requiring up to 4 hours of driving.
Milwaukee to LA is about 2200 miles. I am thinking about 4 to 5 days for this trip ... with 6 to 7 hours of driving (day time only) per day. I plan to stay in "acceptable" motels/hotels, but am not making any reservations ahead of time (not knowing where I will stop each night for rest).
Regarding preparing the car for the trip: any tips? 2200 miles is not a lot of miles for car -- it is less than one oil change cycle. Will there be any more wear and tear on tires just because one is driving continuously?
I realzie I'll drive through some tornado states (MO, OK, TX, ..) ... any reason to worry about? any tips or cautions?

It sounds as if you 've set a realistic timetable for yourself. Motel 6 is usually a pretty good place, in my experience. Of course, I like them because they let dogs in the rooms.
Just be sure that your car's tires have good tread on them. And, it wouldn't hurt to check the air pressure when you get closer to the Rocky Mountains. If you don't have one already, get a gas can to put in the trunk. And bring a cell phone. I don't know what kind of vehicle you're driving, but you may find that your gas mileage may improve a little bit at higher and less humid elevations. I experienced that once driving across Nevada. Oh, and inspect the radiator hoses and drive belts thoroughly, replacing anything that doesn't look right.
All I can suggest regarding the tornado possibilities is to find a weather station to listen to on the radio.
Also, it would be a good idea to bring some gallon jugs of water along.
