saltwater 29g biocube questions!?
hello RC. i have a stock 29g biocube. i have a few questions. what are some upgrades i should look into? good powerheads brands and price? good protien skimmer? what should i add first anemone or clownfish? good sand sifting fish? choices for cleanup crew? what will take care of my brown algae all over my liverock? and are the stock bioballs good mech filtration? can i take them out and put live rock? any advice ? thanks in advance. new here on reef central and i really appreciate all the knowledge from you fellow reefer!

yes this is probably his first saltwater tank.
i do own this tank and can help you out.
You can upgrade the lighting by either removing the lid and getting an upgraded lighting system like Metal halide which will be better but much more expensive, or change the lighting. Their is a company that modifies biocube hoods to hold 6 power compacts instead of 2 and some that have metal halides. again very expensive, the stock lighting is good for LPS and soft corals. not enough for anemones and SPS.
I like hydor powerheads for my biocube, it does a good job at providing a current opposite the output of the filter.
oceanic makes an ok protein skimmer, anything is better than nothing. it fits in the first chamber of hte filter.
the biocube doesnt have enough lighting for an anemone long term, it might survive about 5 months before it becomes bleached.
Sand shifting gobys are fine, but i like using sand shifting starfish instead as they arent as large and destructive as gobies.
cleaning crews include hermit crabs, tuban and turbo snails, cleaner peppermint shrimp
the brown algae is normal for live rock.
the bioballs are ok, they do what they are meant to do, but most of us nano keepers take them out and use live rock rubble instead for the best biological filtration.
this tank can be really great, i have my BC29 on youtube and get good feedback, very stable but stock slow, mines has been going for about 7 months and has over 25 species of corals.
