Have a electric train transformer. I was going to get a better one.?
It's an old one from a lionel set. Basically it needs to be serviced but it's not one that can hanlde a longer track and bigger engines which is something else I'm planning on doing. I know lionel no longer is in the G scale market but what other companies transformers would be compatible? Could you give specifics?
Model Rectifier Corporation http://www.modelrectifier.com is pretty much "it" for making train transformers. They have good products that last a long time. Pick what transformer you want from their site then find a place to buy it like maybe on eBay etc.
If you are making an outdoor layout there are many options to use, including putting batteries that charge constantly in a boxcar to keep constant power without having to worry about perfectly clean track. Others (like me) are using DCC which is the current standard for serious model railroaders. That DOES require very clean track at all times though.
