How does the KATO unitrack differ from Bachmann E-Z track?
I am considering changing my N scale railroad track from E-Z track to KATO unitrack. Is there any special power pack necessary for KATO unitrack or is it possible to use any kind of power pack?
Electrically and functionally, they're the same. The Kato track will run with a regular power pack, and will run with DCC. They both will use a 2 wire connection to a power pack.
I travel a lot, so most of my "layouts" are based on sectional track. I prefer the Kato track because it seems that it is more widely available, and also has more sizes (lengths of straight track, radius of curves, etc) available. If I remember correctly the Bachman track is a little higher (the roadbed is higher), but I'd guess the height of the roadbed is probably not a big deal.
The two types of track won't connect directly to each other, but you could take a piece of track and cut off the specialized connectors to create an adapter track piece that would allow you to connect your old Bachman track to some new Kato track to try it out.
