Tickets and Seating Arrangements for Ford Center of Performing Arts-Illinois and Grant Park
In 1926, it opened as simply the Oriental Theatre. It was one of the beautiful movie palaces erected during that time and was designed to give visitors a luxurious experience during their time inside the theatre. The former Iroquois Theatre was previously erected at the same location but was destroyed in a fire in 1903. For over a decade, after showing exploitation type movies, the Oriental Theatre was closed. The original architects George and Cornelius Rapp also build the Chicago Theatre. In 1990, the Oriental Theatre was restored and became known as The Ford Center for the Performing Arts Oriental Theatre.
Many notable performances by legendary entertainers have been staged at the Ford Center of Performing Arts including Danny Kaye, Al Jolson, Cab Calloway, George Burns, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Additionally, many noteworthy productions have been featured at the Ford Center of Performing Arts also. The fantastic musical hit Ragtime signaled the reopening of the theater in 1999 and was a successful premiere. So whether you're looking for tickets to upcoming events such as The Addams Family or 101 Dalmations, you can find many of these events at the Ford Center of Performing Arts.
Patrons of all ages over 5 are allowed in the theater but must have a ticket to enter. Once inside, seating choices abound. From the balcony down to the tiered mezzanine, there are ample views available with excellent sites to the stage from each seat. To maximize your experience at the Ford Center of Performing Arts, you can arrive 30 minutes before a show for house seating. Be sure to leave sound recorders and cameras at home as they are not allowed in the theatre at any time. All shows do start promptly on time as well, which means if you are running late, you may be forced to wait to be seated at the discretion of management.
Grant Park is another fantastic Chicago destination for getting out under the stars and enjoying a night of entertainment. The acreage is about as old as the country itself. In 1844, it was officially designated a park and named Lake Park because it was lakefront property. Many great and not so great changes would take place on the parcel of land that was supposed to remain free of buildings and structures. In 1901, it was renamed Grant Park in honor of President Ulysses S. Grant. Many court battles and legal restrictions were fought and placed but ultimately exceptions were made and the area was challenged.
Fortunately, caring advocates for keeping the area as an undeveloped one stayed at the helm of initiatives to restore and preserve the area. The result included the creation of the Art Institute of Chicago, Adler Planetarium, Field Museum of Natural History, Shedd Aquarium and most recently, redevelopment of the former Illinois Central rail yards into Millennium Park. The passage of time and circumstance has not been without major uprisings in the 60s and many civic and sports events. The Chicago Bulls have held championship celebrations and most recently the park was the designated location for the first African American President Barack Obama's victory speech on election day in 2008.
Grant Park has gained national acclaim for hosting some of the largest events in the city of Chicago. Be prepared for crowds but anticipate the time of your life should you choose to attend festivals such as the Chicago Jazz Festival, Taste of Chicago, Lollapalooza or the Chicago Blues Festival. You'll want to spend some time at the Buckingham Fountain where there is a light and water display during warm weather that last for an hour.
