Top Tips for Driving in Snow and Ice
The latest batch of snow and icy conditions has brought chaos to our roads. If, like me, you live in the middle of nowhere and your local council conveniently ‘forgot’ to grit the roads in your area, you’ll have had to deal with ice rinks caused by compacted snow and ice. Obviously, the best advice is to stay at home if you don’t have to travel. If it’s absolutely essential for you to go out, then these tips should help keep you safe out there.
Preparation before you go out on a journey is vital. Before you venture out, check that your tyres have at least 3mm tread and that their pressures are correct. Take the time to de-ice all of your windows thoroughly. Check your local traffic reports, and try to stick to major routes where possible
Whilst on the road, follow these tips to avoid any problems:
- If you have trouble pulling away, try selecting second gear.
- Drive smoothly at all times, avoid sudden turns and heavy braking or acceleration.
- Driving in high a gear as possible is safest to avoid wheelspin.
- Drive slower than usual – it’s the best way to avoid getting into trouble. Stopping distances can be up to 10 times longer than usual, so keep an increased distance from the car in front.
- If you find yourself skidding, ignore your instinct to slam the brakes on in an emergency, as it will only make things worse. Depress the clutch and ease your foot off the accelerator or brake. Turn the steering wheel gently in the direction that you want to drive, and when the tyres regain grip on the road you’ll be back in control.
- Just because the road looks like it has been treated doesn’t mean there aren’t still icy patches around, so remain cautious at all times.
* If you do get stuck, try placing a blanket or sack under the front wheels for them to grip onto. Keep moving until you reach safe ground.
You never know when you might get stranded. You could be out driving your new Ford Ka in Sussex, or your used Toyota Corolla in Manchester. So, if you are going out on a journey, always make sure you have enough fuel, and bring along some food and drink, warm clothing, a blanket and a torch.

Can snow, that has turned to ice, on your car scratch the paint?
The other day my girlfriend told me to go brush the snow off of the car before it turned to ice otherwise the ice would scratch my paint if it started to slide around.
Is this true? I told her she was nuts but now that I see how hard the ice is I'm beginning to think. I have a white car so if it's getting scratched, I have no idea.
