How can the dew point in Wisconsin be more than areas along the gulf coast?
We in Wisconsin are again experiencing summer. I've lived here most of my life. It seems that we get these days, like today, where the dew point (measure of humidity) is more than that of areas on the gulf coast. Is there an explanation for this occurrence? I can only make illogical guesses, like Wisconsin is one big giant mosquito swamp to begin with, or all that gulf moisture that gets pushed north stops here and gets trapped, or better yet, great lake effect? I don't know. Is there someone out there with a little knowledge of earth sciences behind them that can give me a reasonable, perhaps logical explanation to this humidity? Right now-Madison WI dew point 74, Mobile AL dew point 72.
I am not familiar with the sensors at Madison, but many of the sensors for temperature/dew point are located in agricultural fields near airports in the midwest. Corn especially is noted in June and July to put a lot of moisture into the air and locally increase dew points to ridiculously high values. Waterloo, IA. is notorious for this problem and has measured dew points around 90 degrees this time of year. Forecasters often have to take sensor location into account.
