Running two hornby 00 gauge trains - sons Christmas present?
I have one power supply and one controller. I understand that I will need another controller and that the track will need to be separate. However, can someone tell me:
1. Can I use points to switch one train from one loop to another loop? If so, will the power work ok (i.e., switching from using power from loop 1 to loop 2's power?).
2. Do I need another power supply or will the PSU I have power two tracks at once?
There is a potential problem in wiring turnouts. The power should only be connected to the "tail" or single track of the turnout. This means that if turnouts are on the same siding, then you will have to put insulated gaps in the track work between the two turnouts. "==//==" are points and frog, "||" is
an electrical gap. The current is carried through the points to the track to which the turnout is switched.

If you are going to run two trains, it is sometimes useful to "block" the track design. This means to create isolated sections of track so that one train only can run at one time. There are several books available about track wiring. It is possible to have two controllers, one for each train, so that a block can be run through one controller or another.
A more modern approach is DCC 4operation. An electronic decoder chip is wired into the locomotive. It can then be "coded" to a DCC controller for that locomotive. The instructions pass from the controller through the track in the form of coded impulses to the decoder, which can then control the locomotives speed, direction, lights, and sound if so equipped.
