Escali Xl Bathroom Scale (xl180): Good Performance
There are many different scales on the market today. There are several major companies that you can find in just about any Walmart or Target. There are also plenty of other companies that are selling scales online and in many different venues. Some scales offer good quality, while others offer all of the bells and whistles, and some try to offer both. In this article I am going to talk about a scale made by a company called Escali. The digital scale reviewed is the XL180: Extra Large Display Digital Scale.
The XL180 is a standard digital scale that was built for a particular group of people: those of us that have a few more years under our belt. This scale was built with the same high level quality and control that many other have been built with. It has a high quality, high precision strain gauge sensor that comes just about standard in today’s digital scales. Scales made in today’s society are not the same as yesterday’s analog scales. Dial scales were engineered with a spring inside that was then attached a mechanism that made the paper that had weights written on it, to rotate. These older dial scales were very simply to re-adjust by just a simple knob at the front. Digital scales that are manufactured today are obviously not that simple. One of the major features is a small microcomputer that calculates the strain put on the strain gauge. It takes this information and then processes it and display the weight on the display screen. One of the hallmarks of this system is a constant tare feature that most digital scales have built in. Whenever the scale is activated, it automatically ‘tares’ itself: meaning that it automatically re-adjusts itself every time it is used. This is a very note-worthy feature as the scale is typically always in tip-top shape.
The XL180 has all of the features mentioned above. It also utilizes high-quality impact resistant, tempered glass. This structure is built to hold up and last for many, many years. To back this up, it comes with a 5 year warranty that is good against defects and errors in manufacturing. The surface of the scale has small projections (texture) so as to protect the person from sliding of the scale when feet are wet.
The main characteristic of this scale is the extra large display. The display measures 3.5 inches by 3 inches. This display is huge so that there is no mistaking that bad (or good) number at the top of the scale. This display makes this product an excellent choice for those a little harder of seeing or someone who doesn’t want to strain their eyes.
This product is easy to clean and will maintain its bright white color for a very long time depending on care. This product does not look like the sharpest or newest of electronic devices, but it will not be something that you have to shove under a basket of towels or hide. It will easily contribute to the look and feel of just about any bathroom décor.
If you are need of a digital scale that does not have all the fancy features and buttons, then I believe the XL180 might be your scale. With a simple, stand and read functionality, you’ll be assured to get accurate readings and not have to wonder or bend over and squint at the display to see your weight.

Multiple gauges in O scale?
I'm working on using as many different gauges in O scale as I can use with readily available track in a mining/industrial layout. Here are the combinations I'm thinking of using. Any hints on a better track or where to find info on how to model certain gauges would be most appreciated:
#1 track for 7' broad gauge (like the Great Western in Britain)
O-27 for standard gauge (or 5' & 5'3" if Proto-48 is feasible for std)
S track for meter & 42"
On30/HO for 24", 30", 36" (is TT around for 24? is there cheap On3?)
HOn_/N for 18"
Nn_/Z for 12"
Other then Standard gauge (2 or 3 rail) and On30" you will have to scratch build almost everything.
TT is all but dead. (I don't know any companies that produce it)
