I need help with my Protein Skimmer...Por favor?
i broke in my coralife super skimmer 65 but i'm not quite sure how to adjust it.
i guess i understand out it woks... the bubbles are in the little chamber and above the bubbles are foam. any debris or whatever that is picked up in the floats to the top of the chamber, than into the foam and flows over into the collection cup.
I'm not sure if that's correct but that's how i see it.
If that's the case, don't get where the level should be. If i have the foam to the top, then the collection cup over fills. If i don't have the foam to the top, then I don't see how any bad stuff can get over the little funnel and into the collection cup.
A pic of how the level should be in terms of bubbles and foam would be useful..
ALso, when cycling a new tank w/ pre-cured LR shipped from online, how much and how often should i do water changes??

To adjust your protein skimmer have the bubbles just so that they do not over flow into the collection cup. Let it run for a few hour and recheck. If you are getting a ton of water then reduce the bubbles slightly and repeat. The water should look really dirty when its working right and you should only need to empty it once a day. The skimmer works much the same way that Soap suds do. That is that the foam is able to hold the debree and caries it up into the collection cup.
As for the LR. More then likly it still needs curring. I have a hard time believing that they ship it in such a manner that it does not start to dry out. To cure it all you need to do is set it in the tank and cover it with ocean water. Let it set for about a week and clean up any debree that flakes off. After that you can add your sand and allow the tank to finish cycleing. If you added your sand already then just make sure the rock is firmly on the bottom and not just sitting on the sand. You don't need to do any water changes for the first month at least.
