The other weighs 6# and is moving west at 12 mph.
Disregarding friction,heat,compression and anything else that could get in the way of making this anything but a pure puzzle,
what happens when the 2 cars meet and couple.
HINT: momentum is defined as a body's mass times its velocity, which is expressed mv.
The conservation of momentum must always be maintained

The 2coupled cars will move at 2 mph.
its based on momentum of 10# x 4(40#)
the 2nd car of 6# x12 (723)
When they couple they will 16# Since the respective momentum are in opposite directions, you have to subtract them 72-40=32#/mph
since the momentum is found by mv and we know the mass is 16#, the velocity will be 2mph (16# x2# =32#,/mph
So the conservation of momentum is maintained
