Why do some electric locomotives sound like they are changing gear like a car?
I've noticed that some electric loco's sound like a car changing gear when they are accelerating. Why is this?
The previous three answers could be correct. But then, depending on precisely what type of train we are talking about, they could be a million miles off.
Some modern electric trains use asynchronous 3-phase AC traction motors instead of the more traditional straight DC motors. However, these need some fairly complex traction control electronics in order to get the train moving. The first generation of these trains used a component called a Gate Turn-Off (GTO) Thyristor that would create a sound very much like a car going up through the gears. However, there are no gears as such. The sound that the GTO Thyristors are generating have more to do with the modulation of the asynchronous 3-phase supply to the traction motors to make them work.
You can hear what these sound like from the YouTube video of a British Class 365 EMU departing from a station stop that I have linked to below. Just remember to turn the volume right up.
