For a diesel electric loco to increase its speed should the diesel alternator also rev up?
1. will not the alternator in idle speed produce the required electricity to run the train?
The alternator may produce enough energy to run the train, but your missing an important point. It takes alot of energy to start the train from the battery. It takes the alternator time to recharge the batterys. With the alternator only supply enough energy to run the train the battery will die without being recharged.
A better idead would be a clucth like modern car A/C systems use. It does not engage until the compressor is needed. It spins easier than a constant parasitic drag on the engine.
