Why do level crossing lights flash alternate amber?
No silly answers please, such as 'to tell you to stop' lol, I know that. My question is, why do they flash amber instead of having a normal set of traffic lights?? Where did this originate and why?? Thanks!!
I'm in the UK. Maybe they are red (??) lol, I just wanted to know why they flash instead of being a steady colour or traffic lights set-up
They are red, not amber.
The normal setup is two reds and one amber.
In a sequence, the first light you will see is the amber which lights up steady, it does not flash. This is accompanied by an audible alarm on most level crossings. This is a pre-warning that the barriers are about to lower. The two red lights will then begin to flash as the amber distinguishes. Then the barriers will begin to lower. The audible alarm will stop once the barriers are in the down position.
History
I'm not sure about the crossing keeper answer about waving the red light but do know that some old wooden gate crossings had a steady red light in the centre. The gates were vulnerable to being run into as the lights were not that good. Maybe the flashing red lights replaced these?
I think it is safe to say that red flashing lights attract more attention than steady lights.
