Why use the API type A instead of the API type C?
At Herkules Crane Co., LTD we truly believe that a box boom design is to be preferred over a type C crane with a grid boom and A-frame, mainly because:
- A box boom construction is simpler, there are fewer critical welds, the materials used can be stronger and it can be more corrosion resistant than the API type C crane.
- The load is held by hydraulic actuators (cylinders) which are very rugged and simple in their design which makes failures exceptionally rare. A type C crane contains wire ropes, winches, planetary gears, hydraulic motors, spring applied disc brakes etc. which if anyone of these components fail can lead to disaster.
- Maintenance of a box boom crane is considerable easier as there are fewer exposed components and the system is much simpler, which decreases the maintenance cost and downtime of the crane.
- A box boom crane takes up much less space as it does not have an A-Frame.
- The energy in the boom hoist wire rope in type C cranes has been known to cause the cranes to tilt backwards. This happens when a heavy load is suddenly released and the energy in the wire rope pulls back the boom. This type of accident can not occur on a box boom crane.
- The K-Value for our cranes is very low, which is favorable for sea-stage operations.
All in all we believe a box type crane is preferred as it increases the safety and reliability while significantly reducing the costs.
Additional advantages of the HERKULES Box Boom crane design:
- The whole structure is made as light as possible by the use of extra high strength steel, and advanced design optimization. This ensures that the environment is affected as little as possible, because the amount of raw material is low. Further more, in operation the crane will require less energy to move as the inertia of the structure is low and this will also lessen the forces exerted on the platform. As a consequence, the fuel consumption will also decrease as will the wear and tear on parts, so that the crane requires very little maintenance.
- The crane boom is made of special weather resistant extra high strength steel, which will corrode much less than normal steel, for instance if the paint is torn off, and the steel is directly exposed.
- The elevation of the HERKULES box-boom crane booms is able to elevate 88 degrees from horizontal and make the minimum radius very short. For some platforms this is also a huge advantage when hoisting drilling pipes as the boom does not interfere with the operation, making it more safe, and reduces the cost.

About the Author
Lennart Avnby is a Danish crane specialist with many years of experience within the trade. He started designing and constructing cranes for Danish Company in the early 1970ties. In 1976 he moved to Sweden and established his own Crane Construction Company and proved to be very successful. During the Swedish period he constructed some unique cranes that created a lot of attention within the industry, one being the largest capacity truck loader in the world. The financial crash in Sweden in the beginning of the 1990ties forced him to close down his operation and he moved to Thailand where he established his Thai Company Herkules Crane Co. Ltd.
Mr. Avnby is today a well known and highly respected Crane expert with focus on design and construction of off-shore-cranes of exceptional design and performance exceeding international standards. What licenses/accreditations does one require to drive one of those container stacking maglift cranes you see at container industrial sites?!
