Why are the Cleveland Cavaliers second in the Eastern Conference and the Bulls fifth?
Shouldn't Toronto and Miami be second and third since they're division leaders? Chicago has a better record than both of them.
Your question wouldn't matter last year but this year they changed the seeding format.
I don't know if you watched the playoffs last year but remember that epic 7 game series between Dallas and San Antonio. Well that made a lot of people want to change the seeding fomat because they wanted to see the teams with the 2 best records play in the Conference Finals and the the Semi-Finals.
Anyway this is how it works. They seed the three division leaders and the team with the next best record (the Cavs) according to their records. So if the Bulls pulled a head of the Cavs in the standings they would be second and the Cavs fifth.
Now the three divison leaders automatically get playoff bids still, but this ensures that the teams with the two best records in the Conference, if they are in the same divison won't play until the Conference finals.
So in essence to illustrate my point his year here is a example. In the West Dallas, Utah and Phoenix our the divison leaders but San Antonio is third in the standings and Utah fourth because the Spurs have a better record then Utah and anybody else except for the two other divison leaders.
