Didn't Asus know notebook computers need hard drives?
I'm worried the next economic slowdown is going to hurt growth in business startups — a negative for both companies. Wal-Mart (WMT) is less economically sensitive and much bigger back-to-school destination than Staples and Office Depot combined.

Dell, the No. 1 maker of personal computers, on Monday said it is recalling 4.1 million notebook batteries made by Sony Corp. (SNE) because they could overheat and catch fire. A battery of the type involved in the recall was in a Dell laptop that erupted in flames in Japan earlier this year.
Sharp Corp. said it was recalling 28,000 Sony-made packs for seven laptop models plus separately sold batteries, all for domestic Japanese use, according to company spokesman Hiroshi Takenami.
He said the company so far has received no reports of accidents as in the United States."We decided to recall the batteries to ensure safety for our customers," Takenami said. The recalls come after the discovery that the batteries can short-circuit and cause some computers to overheat.
Nissan said Tuesday the joint venture with Sumitomo Corporation is expected to begin operations in late 2010 in Japan and the United States. The companies have yet to finalize details including the capitalization of the venture.
The launch is in line with a potential surge in demand for electric vehicles powered by batteries.In August, Nissan rolled out its zero-emission TOSHIBA PA3178U-1BAS rechargeable battery vehicle, the Leaf, which will go into mass-production globally in 2012. The car uses a lithium-ion battery pack.
But though the elves might be crying in their workshop over their downsized Christmas bonuses, that doesn't mean you can't make someone else happy this holiday.

Don't they know you don't just go selling laptops for less than $750 _ let alone $400 _ unless the hardware has been aged like whisky?
Asustek Computers Inc. went ahead and broke the rules with the Eee PC. And we should all be thankful.
