Algebra HW Help Please!?
I really do not understand what we are doing in Algebra, and how to set up equations. Please can you explaine to me how to do some of these problems?
1. A passenger trains speed is 60 mph, and a freight train's speed is 40 mph. The passenger train travels the same distance in 1.5 hours less time than the freight train. How long does each train take to make the trip.
2. May rides her bike the same distance that Leah walks. May rides her bike 10 km/h faster than Leah walks. If it takesMay 1 h and Leah 3 h to travel that distance, how fast does each travel?
3. The lenght of a rectangle is twice the width. the perimeter is 48 inc. Find the dimentsions of the rectangle.
4. At 10 AM, a car leaves the house at a rate of 60 mph. At the same time, another car leaves the same house at a rate of 50 mph in the opposite direction. At what time will the cars be 330 miles apart
5. The sum of 4 consecutive odd integers is 216. Find the four integers.
You need a tutor buddy. these are easy questions.
1. Let the distance be x miles. Then according to given,
x/60=(x/40)-1.5
which gives x=180.
Thus the trains take 3 hours and 4.5 hours to make the trip.
2. Let the distance they travel is x km. Then given is:
x=(x/3)+10
which solves as x=15.
So they travel at 5 km/h and 15 km/h respectively.
3. Let the dimesions be x and 2x. Then 2(x+2x)=48
so, x=8. So the dimesions are 8 and 16 inches.
4. Let the number of hours to get this separation be x.
Then 60x+50x=330 - which gives, x=3.
Hence 10am+3hours = 1 pm is the required time.
5. LEt the first number be x. Then x+(x+2)+(x+4)+(x+6)=216
which solves for x=51. Thus the numbers are 51,53,55 and 57.
