Physics Problem (Newtonian Mechanics)?
A 2.7 kg object hangs at one end of a rope that
is attached to a support on a railroad boxcar.
When the car accelerates to the right, the
rope makes an angle of 27◦ with the vertical.
The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s2 .
Find the acceleration of the car.
Answer in units of m/s2.

When the mass swings out and is held in place, the acceleration is constant. The only horizontal force is the component of the string’s tension (Tsinθ). From Newton’s 2nd law:
∑F = ma = Tsinθ------------>(1)
Vertically, there are two forces acting on the mass: the vertical component of tension (Tcosθ) and its weight (downward, so it is -mg). The equation is:
∑F = 0 = Tcosθ - mg
mg = Tcosθ----------------->(2)
Recalling the trig identity sinθ/cosθ = tanθ suggests dividing (1) by (2):
ma / mg = Tsinθ / Tcosθ
a / g = tanθ
a = gtanθ
= (9.8m/s²)tan27°
= 5.0m/s²
Note that the mass was given, but not needed. Also, I wonder if the correct angle was given because I don’t think trains can accelerate this fast (except maybe bullet trains and other high speed trains).
