why did the car help the boom and what else played a major part in the boom?

It was Henry Ford with his Model T Fords that contributed to the boom in the US in the 1920s. There are many reasons for this -
- they were produced on assembly lines - mass production - standardisation - and provided work for many men - and good wages.
- this new process resulted in a huge cut in production time and costs - helping the boom
- Through mass production and low production costs, he was able to cut the car's price repeatedly.
- The cars were affordable to most Americans and even for those who could not afford a car they were still able to buy on credit - people's spending increased.
- The cars also helped gangsters like Al Capone and his Chicago gang - they used the cars as quick getaways and for bootlegging.
-The auto industry became a pillar of the U.S. economy in the 1920's. The value of its output exceeded that of any other industry. Furthermore, it had become basic to the well-being of many other industries. The automakers bought about 80 per cent of U.S. rubber production, 75 per cent each of plate-glass and oil production, 25 per cent of machine tools, and 20 per cent of steel output.
- The economy was also stimulated by the thousands of repair shops, filling stations, restaurants, and lodging places that had sprung up to serve the millions of Americans who traveled by car.

2. America took over many of the overseas markets because Europe were recovering from their losses in the First World War.
3. The development of technology led to many new and exciting products for example fridges, radios and vacuum cleaners. Industries were modernised and became more efficient with new machines.
4. New manufacturing techniques such as mass production meant that products could be made cheaply and efficiently.
5. Advertising was introduced on a large scale. This persuaded the American citizens to buy goods and many industries became very rich.
6. Credit made it easier for the middle-classes to buy expensive things. Credit is when you can pay for something in manageable insallments.
7. Confidence in the stock market grew considerably. People believed that the boom would never stop so it became self-generating. It became fashionable to spend money.
8. The Republican Presidents of the USA held the policy that they wouldn't interfere with business and wouldnt take any control of financial institutions.They also lowered taxes on the companies' income, giving the wealthy more money to invest in businesses. This meant that businesses did extremely well.
